September

Posted on Saturday 6 August 2005

September is my favorite time of year. For me, it’s truly when the new year begins. I rarely make resolutions on New Year’s Eve cause I know my great intentions will last oh, about 3 days, (or at least until the “my head is in a vise” hangover ends.) Maybe it’s due to the back to school mentality, but September is when I buy new school, er work, supplies, sharpen my pencils and get new notebooks. I enjoy clothing shopping as well. All the new dresses, sportswear, and accessories are in the stores, and I subsequently decide which ones I must have. New shoes are simply the best! I also like the increased activity on the streets, the kids running around with their backpacks and the adults walking with more of a spring in their step, (or maybe they are just walking faster cause their kids are late to school?) Even the dogs seem to be more energetic as they frolic around the sidewalk. I LOVE September. It completely invigorates me.

I keep thinking about September during this miserable heat wave. There have been relentless heat advisories and the temperature topped out last week at 95 degrees, (but felt like 108 degrees.) Gawd. It feels like hell. Doing the smallest errand usually requires a bottle of water afterwards. Everyone is grumpy. The subways smell like unwashed people, (or at least people whose deodorant have long since failed them.) Garbage is rotting on the street. Yum, um NOT. Thank heavens for air conditioning and oscillating fans. My last electricity bill was through the roof. At this point I don’t even care as long as Ally da Pup and I are cool in our 72 degree home. However, I’m still counting down the days… only 25 more to go.

Ah, September.

September … somewhat bittersweet (but of course, it’s the ‘sweet’ that matters). Back in the day, the school day that is, I always looked forward to the first day of school and my birthday. But now … well … all I can say is September precedes winter … and this girl loves it hot hot hot. I love hot weather and September always means winter follows. But, the good thing is … I’m here to celebrate another birthday and look forward to the spring/summer that follows.

As a ground dwelling rodent, I look forward to Sept. also. Back to school means increased traffic. Increased traffic means increased road kill. Increased road kill means Bob eats well. As for the weather, I am a creature of all seasons.

I don’t think I have a favorite month. There are fun events and occasions for me each month of the year. I can tell you what I DON’T like and that’s the winter! Brrrr!

I hate the summer, because I despise sweat. Once September rolls around, I start to smile again.

Personally, I don’t know how people walk around in that city of yours with suits and what not — during the Summer of course. It’s just stifling.

September. Lemme see. That’s the month when we have 2 more months of hurricane season. That’s the month that last year we got to evacuate guests at the hotel I work for….TWICE (now I know how it’s done).
The fond memories of new shoes for school are gone…now I just buy shoes whenever I feel like it…which seems to be so often DSW now sends me personal mail!
