Here’s to the chick flicks

Just a few of my favorite movie tearjerkers…

“Steel Magnolias”

At her daughter Shelby’s, (Julia Roberts,) funeral – M’Lynn, (Sally Field,) finally loses it… Me too.

M’Lynn : [ crying ] I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.
[screaming ]
M’Lynn : I’m fine! I can jog all the way to Texas and back, but my daughter can’t! She never could! Oh God! I am so mad I don’t know what to do! I wanna know why! I wanna know *why* Shelby’s life is over! I wanna know how that baby *ever* know how wonderful his mother was! Will he *ever* know what she went through for him! Oh *God* I wanna know *why*? *Why*? Lord, I wish I could understand!
[In a firm tone ]
M’Lynn : No! No! No! It’s not supposed to happen this way! I’m supposed to go first. I’ve always been ready to go first! I-I don’t think I can take this! I-I don’t think I can take this! I-I just wanna *hit* somebody ’til they feel as bad as I do! I just wanna *hit* something! I wanna *hit it hard*!
[continues sobbing ]
Clairee : *Here*!
[Grabs Ouiser by the shoulder and positions her in front of M'Lynn ]
Clairee : *Hit this*! Go ahead M’Lynn, *slap her*!
Ouiser Boudreaux : [ Taken aback and confused ] Are you crazy?
Clairee : *Hit her*!
Ouiser Boudreaux : *Are you high, Clairee*?
Truvy : [ In a frightened tone ] Clairee, have you lost your mind?
Clairee : We’ll sell t-shirts sayin’ “I SLAPPED OUISER BOUDREAUX!” Hit her!
Annelle : [ in a scared tone ] Ms. Clairee, enoough!
Clairee : Ouiser, this is your chance to do something for your fellow man! Knock her lights out, M’Lynn!
Ouiser Boudreaux : [ snatches away ] Let go o’ me!
Clairee : M’LYNN, YOU JUST MISSED THE CHANCE OF A LIFETIME! HALF O’ CHIQUAPIN PARISH’LL GIVE THEIR EYE-TEETH TO TAKE A WHACK O’ OUISER!

“Truly Madly Deeply”

Nina, (Juliet Stevenson,) and Jamie, (Alan Rickman,) after Jamie’s sudden death. Jamie suddenly appears and they flirt like they always have. We’re really not sure if Jamie is actually there or not… This one makes me cry buckets.

Nina : I love you.
Jamie : I love you.
Nina : I really love you.
Jamie : I really, truly love you.
Nina : I really, truly, madly love you.
Jamie : I really, truly, madly, deeply love you.
Nina : I really, truly, madly, deeply, passionately love you.
Jamie : I really, truly, madly, deeply, passionately, remarkably love you.
Nina : I really, truly, madly, deeply, passionately, remarkably, umm… deliciously love you.
Jamie : I really, truly, madly, passionately, remarkably, deliciously… juicily love you.
Nina : Deeply! Deeply! You passed on deeply, which was your word, which means you couldn’t have meant it! So you’re a fraud, that’s it!
[Jaime playfully pushes Nina away, then pulls her back towards him ]
Nina : You’re probably a figment of my imagination…
[pauses ]
Nina : Juicily?
[Both laugh and make faces ]

“Terms of Endearment”

Aurora, (Shirley MacLaine,) screaming at the oblivious nurse while her daughter Emma, (Debra Winger,) is in her hospital bed suffering from terminal cancer… I keep the entire box of kleenex standing by.

Aurora Greenway : It’s past ten. My daughter is in pain. I don’t understand why she has to have this pain. All she has to do is hold out until ten, and IT’S PAST TEN! My daughter is in pain, can’t you understand that! GIVE MY DAUGHTER THE SHOT!

OK, lets hear a few of your favorite scenes… and feel free to paraphrase!

Dang, I had my favorite scene from “Clerks” all picked out, and then realized you want something from a chick flick… and that is hardly a chick flick… sigh.. back to the drawing board. I’m not even sure if I’ve ever seen a chick flick.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE, these three films, too!!! WOW! I’m too emotional to write about some of the others that bring me to tears…I’ll have to come back…BUT, I’ll just say this: “The Miracle Worker”, towards the end of the film…when Helen feels the water on her fingers and Annie Sullivan is PumpingThe Water….Oh, My Dear….Sooo very moving..and the music that accompany’s this ‘denumount’…and then, Annie tells them..”SHE KNOWS!!! SHE KNOWS!!!Gorgeous, beyond words… and I cannot stop sobbing…and I’ve seen this film probably 20 times!!!!!
I love that you have asked about this….! I will be back…and thanks for coming to my blog!

Love those scenes. Especially TRULY MADLY DEEPLY! But my ALL TIME FAVORITE tearjerker is CINEMA PARADISO. The final scene SLAYS me every time. I own it on DVD and watch it every now and then when i need a “fix”.

I love Steel Magnolias!! There are a couple that get me every time. The Wedding Singer, when he sings that song he wrote to her on the plane, “I Wanna Grow Old With You.” And the movie HomeWard Bound with the two dogs and the cat are trying to make it home, the scene where Chance (the young pup) and the cat make it back and their standing there waiting for Shadow (older dog) to make it home and it he does come so they start to go inside and then you hear him barking and he comes limping over the hill. Gets me every freaking time, in fact I’m crying now. I’m such a loser.

Lisa you mentioned two of my favorite movies. That scene from Steel Magnolias is a classic and I LOVE Olympia Dukakis!! Terms of Endearment was very moving but the comedy worked so well in it. I don’t have any favorites because there are always scenes in every movie I watch that I find unforgettable.

Terms of Endearment is a total tearjerker, I must have seen it like twenty times now. Also, Mad Max makes me cry too…those outfits are hideous!

The bit of Terms of Endearment that always gets me is where the boys are saying goodbye to their mother (Debra Winger) and the littlest one is unabashedly sobbing, but the older one refuses to even kiss her. Oh, my poor heart.

For a holiday puddle-of-goo-fest, ain’t nothin’ better than It’s a Wonderful Life, but you must do this only once, and in black and white; otherwise you’ll overdose. Anyway, I generally start my meltown with the little girl praying in voiceover, “Please, God, something’s wrong with Daddy,” calm down for a while, then start again when George stops Mr. Gower from accidentally poisoning the patient and Mr. Gower hits him, then realizes his mistake, goes to George to apologize, and George ducks and sobs, “Please, Mr. Gower, don’t hit my sore ear again.” Praise the Lord and pass the Kleenex.

I’m reading the Terms of Endearment quote you left, and I’m already in tears, cuz I remember that scene…

But the movie that always gets to me, no matter what is My Girl. To this day, I still cry uncontrollably during the funeral scene where Anna is so distraught by her best friend’s death by bee stings.

Wow . . . I consider myself a pretty big movie buff and I have seen NONE of those films. Of course, you aren’t exactly encouraging me to do so with this post, they all sound like chick-flicks of the worst variety.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a good cry… thanks for sharing. Maybe that’s just what I need to get out of this funk! :)

I’ve never seen Terms of Endearment, but have always planned to see it one day. But now that I know that Debra Winger’s character dies at the end, maybe not.

Hiya sweetie! You silly romantic! One of my favorites is at the very end of “Alien” when Sigourney Weavers character blows the creature out of the back hatch of the ship and it hangs on tenaciously and refuses to die, but she fires the ships engines at the last moment and burns the beast all to hell, saving herself! ;)

Laurie – A “chick flick” is one that usually makes women cry ;-)

OldOldLady – Welcome! And what a great movie! I haven’t seen it in ages but it is SO touching.

Last Girl – I LOVE “Cinema Paradiso.” And it is one of the best final scenes EVER!

D-Man – “Jerry Maguire” rocks as well!

Leave – I’m going to have to look for “Homeward Bound.” It sounds fab! And you are SO not a loser my friend! Just a sentimental sap like the rest of us ;-)

TJ – I’m delighted that we share the same taste in movies. EXCEPT for all those scary B- horror flicks that is!

Mrs. Mogul – LMAO @ Mad Max outfits. They WERE pretty bad!

Golf Widow – And when she says “I know you may be sorry you were mean to me but don’t be cause I understand?” or something like that… OH MY GAWD. It absolutely breaks my heart!

David – “My Girl” is a killer as well. SO sad!

Armaedes – They are actually all wonderful movies. You’re just a mean one, Mr. Grinch. Seen THAT one? ;-)

Oh and Armaedes? You are not a TRUE movie buff until you have seen these films. Respectively directed by Herbert Ross, Anthony Minghella, and James L. Brooks.

La Dauphine – Awww hon. But an fyi, if you watch all 3 in one day you may have to be sedated lol.

Heather B. – Sorry to ruin the ending but the movie is still worth it!

Se7en – And what’s WRONG with being a “silly romantic?!” Tis a good thing! And LOL @ Sigourney blowing up the beast! Mwah!

You picked some classics! I’m more of an indie film girl myself, so I can think of a few great moments that are my favorites, but everyone else will say “what movie???” :-)

From the penis gallery, even I can appreciate Steel Magnolias-I go as far as use the phrase, “You know I love you more than my luggage”. A really well-done flick.

Chick Flicks-maybe the ending of “When Harry met Sally”. The interaction of Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal is just amazing, and him running and finding her at the last minuite-simply nice. “French Kiss” was a great “chick” flick-Kevin Klein as a Frenchman, and the improbable story line is actually believable. Not to mention the French countryside et le pays Province-c’est la plus belle!

“Bull Durham”? Most of the women in my life quote this one. Any takers?

I would include “Ishtar” in this category,as only women like this flick. But it belongs in one other category-the “crap film” bin even more!

This isn’t your typical tearjerker scene, but it gets to me every time I see this movie, “Shenendoah,” starring Jimmy Stewart. He’s talking to his dead wife at her grave after he finds his son, daughter-in-law, and their child slain by a gang of wandering soldiers….

” don’t even know what to say to you any more, Martha. There’s not much I can tell you about this war. It’s like all wars, I guess. The undertakers are winning. And the politicians who talk about the glory of it. And the old men who talk about the need of it. And the soldiers, well, they just wanna go home. I guess you’re not so lonely any more, with Ann and James and Jacob. And maybe the boy. You didn’t know Ann, did you? Well, you’d like her. You’d like her, Martha. Why, she and James are so much alike, they’re just like… no… no… we were never that much alike, were we Martha? We just sorta grew alike through the years. But I wish, I wish I could just know what you’re thinking about it all, Martha. And maybe it wouldn’t seem so bad to me if I knew what you thought about it. ”

Those words about war still apply.

Trubs – LOL @ “Sappy Saperstein!”

CC – I adore indie movies – fire away ;-)

Laurie – Hot damn and pass the java coke!

Moket – I wrote about “Bull Durham” in October… And LOL @ “the penis gallery”

    http://www.lisabindacity.com/?p=96

    And “Ishtar” truly sucks ;-)

Nat – That is very moving. I’m going to check it out. You’re right, it still holds up…

    That scene from the Godfather:

[Frank Sinatra character]: Godfather, what can I do? What can I do?

Godfather: *slaps Frank’s face* YOU CAN ACT LIKE A MAN!

I’m getting all teary just thinking about it.

I just thought of another one, Lisa… JOY LUCK CLUB. It DEVASTATED ME when I lived overseas and was missing my mom. Tear jerker to the Nth degree!

I have seen Steel Magnolias so many times that I lose it during the scene where we see M’Lynn walking down the hospital hall after Shelby passes out. Actually, now that I think about it, maybe it’s when Shelby gets her haircut. Actually, now I’m crying just thinking about it. I love that movie!

I can’t believe that no one mentioned Beaches, after the mother dies and Bette Midler’s character sings Wind Beneath My Wings. Gets me every time.

Lisa the Homeward Bound Movies are awesome if you like dogs. But be prepared to cry.

Bathroom Reading – Thanks a heap, now I’m sobbing uncontrollably ;-)

Last Girl – I completely agree! Last time I saw it, I called my mother up in tears and told her how much I loved her!

Lizzie – Isn’t it amazing? I too have seen it more times than I can count. And when M’Lynn is at Shelby’s bed after they turn off the respirator? Oh the tear ducts open!

Leave – Also a good weepy one ;-)

I LOVE When Harry Met Sally. The scene in the end, definately. Also, when they spend all the time on the phone together.

Another movie I heart is: Singles! “Make that a historic chili dog. Bite it. If you take a bite, your answer is yes (to getting married).” That, and “Someone who loves you so much, must scare you half to death”. And…”I was just…no where near your neighborhood” (When he just stops by her house)

I was such a wanna-be Seattle coffee early 90’s grunge fan. Man, that movie is so good, brings back such good high school love memories….

(i’m reading this post-postedly, and catching up quickly, but couldn’t NOT respond.)

    Titanic.

so sue me. the part where Rose and Jack have that hurried goodbye and he sends her off on the boat, and she couldn’t leave and jumps onto the ship and finds him… and they tearfully are kissing eachother like, unbelieveble that they couldn’t sacrifice themselves for one another.

I think i need to go watch Titanic now.
