In honor of this I’m posting a Lisa B “classic.”
Be sure and check out “A Charlie Brown Christmas” tonight at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on ABC!
Why I love Lucy, Snoopy & The Peanuts Gang
When I was a little girl, my mother used to call me Lucy when she said I was being crabby. She was referring to the character from the Peanuts Gang. This did not upset me, I liked Lucy cause she WAS crabby and not well behaved. One of the things I liked best about her was how she always yanked the football away from Charlie Brown just as he went to kick it. AND HE ALWAYS FELL FOR IT. Lucy was never going to leave that football in place but he still kept hoping. She continually fooled him and he never caught on, (he was either an eternal optimist or a total yutz.) I liked Lucy’s style. I also loved her psychiatric booth, “The doctor is IN.” She told it like it was, “five cents, please.” Lucy was a kick ass role model.
I never really liked Charlie Brown much cause I thought he was a wuss. I still do. I know he was supposed to be an “everyman” but I always wanted him to grow a pair you know? I guess someone had to be the conscience for the other characters. Even his dog had more oomph than he did. He was however very dear in “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” trying to get everyone to understand that the holiday wasn’t all about commercialism. He had SUCH bad tree karma though, (I loved how the Christmas tree with about 10 needles suddenly became a full on tree. The joys of animation.) And couldn’t someone teach this kid how to fly a kite without there being a “kite eating tree” around??? Poor Charlie Brown.
Snoopy, ah Snoopy. He had the best fantasy life of anyone I knew. Snoopy fought The Red Baron, “Curse you Red Baron!” in his sopwith camel. He traveled to Needles to visit his long lost brother, Spike. He fought regularly with the cat next door. And he did a fabulous job decorating his doghouse for Christmas! And I LOVED how he danced. Snoopy was a regular Gene Kelly. He also had a tummy alarm and always knew exactly when it was supper time. Heck he even had a song and dance for it. “Oh it’s supper time….!” And I adored his friends, Woodstock the yellow bird was such a cutie. And when Snoopy got annoyed he had great payback, he KISSED Lucy, “Ewww dog germs!!!” Snoopy ruled.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas” is my required holiday viewing. And of course I own the cd. Awesome jazz by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. “Christmas time is hereeeeeeee.” My friend Cathy and I always call each other from out of state to remind the other one the show is on. We both love the scene where all the Peanuts Gang are dancing in rehearsals before the Christmas show. Our favorite are the twin girls tossing their heads, dancing from one leg to the other. Many a drunken party we have emulated these girls!
I was devastated when Charles Schulz died. I felt like I lost a friend. The Peanuts Gang had been around my whole life. Luckily through the joys of media, the “classic” cartoons are still in the newspaper and I can watch all the holiday specials on tv or dvd… “I got candy! I got a cookie! I got a rock.”
Keep on dancing Snoopy!
LB I so love CB.. I know how you feel. It brings back the best of childhood memories for me. I’ll make sure to watch it tonight.. Ciao
I love C.B. too! About Snoopy-my mother has a pair of beagles, Millie and Sweetie Pie, and yes, they do have alarm clocks. I guess that Schultz owned beagles all of his life-beagles always are on an adventure somewhere, and this is no joke. Millie is the alpha dog, and she looks like she is always conspiring. And like Snoopy, she is as loveable to all who know her(when she does something bad, you could TRY to discipline her, but she has this little look that says,”Who loves the beagle?” and you just can’t be mad at “the beagle”) Sweetie Pie-well, her personality is a little flat, but she has that beagle spirit that comes out every now and then(she was a rescue-hard former life).
I always liked Schroeder-aloof and arrogant. Yeah, he had his priorities…..And who could forget Pigpen? I apreciated “Chuck”, as I too have a thing for the red-haired girl next door, but he was a choad, you are right.
And I have to wonder when the religious right would have attacked Schultz for the androgenous “Peppermint Patty”. Dressing in men’s clothes….Suprised.
I miss Schultz every day-I read the paper every day(at work, no less!), and every now and then we get a classic Peanuts.
I agree and Peanuts was always great…
Embrace your inner Lucy, LB!
You know, I don’t actually think I’ve ever seen A Charlie Brown Christmas? After reading this though, I think I’m gonna check it out.
I hate to admit this, but having had a horrible older sister my whole childhood, I cannot look at Lucy without feeling frightened and a little sick.
On the other hand, I love Snoopy and will forever.
Whenever people are bothering me, I mock them like the adults talk in Peanuts. “Wooop Woop Woop….”Hehe, it’s funny!
I’m allergic to peanuts
I love Peanuts and Lucy was always my favorite. I too watch Peanuts Christmas every year, and I can’t wait to watch it again this year. I have to admit that I watch the Rudolph special as well. Oh and I LOVE to watch Snoopy dance!!
I’m not as big a fan as I was and I can’t get into the specials they air like I used to (although “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” will forever be my favorite!). People still say I’m a cross between Peppermint Patty and Lucy and I do a great impersonation of their school teacher (wa wa, wa wa wa waaa)
My fave Peanuts character was always Snoopy of course, always irreverent and always so cool! And boy could that Beagle dance! LOL
They just did a bit on Peanuts on Jimmy Kimmel, and I thought of you!
That Vince Guaraldi Trio album is probably my favorite album. The theme is the coolest TV theme every written.
Tanisha – It’s amazing isn’t it?
Moket – LOVED your stories! And Peppermint Patty and Pigpen, (with his cloud of dirt, even in the snow, cracks me up.
Denny – Indeed!

Marty – Hokay then!
Leave – I KNEW you would like it too! Snoopy rocks the house
TJ – Do your kids like it? And I can definitely see you being a combination of Patty and Lucy!
Se7en – Why am I not surprised? Hehe
CC – Awww thanks!
Neil – Isn’t that THE BEST??? And I agree about the tv theme song.
