Tramp is the Word

Posted on Sunday 10 December 2006

I caught the movie “Grease” on cable the other night.

I’ve always really liked that movie, it’s charming and fun. Great soundtrack as well! And I must admit, I have always had a jones for John Travolta. Can that man dance or what?

Just watching him walk is hot! It’s also fun to see vintage Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, and Jeff Conway strut their stuff.

Every time I watch the movie though, (even as a kid,) I take exception to the film’s ending. Why did Sandy (Newton-John) have to turn into the tramp?

Why did she change for him???

Why didn’t Danny, (Travolta) change for her? I know he tried, i.e. becoming a jock and lettering in track. Well, it worked, damn it! He should have stayed with the new lifestyle. Why did Sandy then decide to give up her nice girl way of life and become a slutty bad girl with a limited future? No matter how good she looked in black leather and high heels! Did neither of them not realize they would have a better life as upstanding citizens? How much future would their be for black leather wearing, cigarette smoking, hot rodding, partying, 50’s rejects?

ARGHHHHHHHH!!!

Grease always did upset my feminist sensibilities.

34 Pups Woofing for 'Tramp is the Word'

I agree, I never got that either and it’s why I never went back to it even thought the performances were strong and the music is fun. It should have had a epilogue where they are all trailer park losers.

My mother was vehement about making sure I understood how very wrong that was – not that she should choose to do it, but that he also made her feel as if it it were necessary.

Unrelated to the whole This Relationship is Based on Tight Pants thing, I always wished I could get onto a friendship basis with Stockard Channing while she was working on West Wing, so I could get her a pink satin jacket with “Abbey” embroidered on the front and “First Ladies” embroidered on the back.

Well, you made a valid point when you said Danny did try to change for her as well. Maybe her inner bad girl was coming out? I saw the “behind the scenes” of Grease once and they talked about how electrified the set became when Olivia stepped out in those pants. She was sewn into them as well.

lmao! i never thought of it that way!

ps. it’s freakish how much that doll looks like Olivia…

But in Grease II, it was the guy that changed. I don’t think it was about changing a female as much as turning the characters into leather fetishists.

    Tell me about it…

    …stud.

    Sorry, i couldn’t help myself.

Then they wouldn’t have had a good model for “Trampy Barbie”! ;)

    Bud – Glad you agree!

And that’s going to be my next post, a kind of Mad Magazine expose of where are they now ;-)

Golfwidow – Your Mom sounds great.

And I loved your jacket idea!

Inanna – I’m sure every crew guy on the set wanted to un-sew her out of that get-up ;-)

    Dawn – Doesn’t she?!

Fuzz – If I remember correctly, Grease II made about 5 cents ;-)

    So much for role reversal…

    LOL @ Leather fetishists!

    Alison – ROFLMAO! Too funny!

Seamus – Indeed! I thought of that too ;-)

OMG! I feel the same way! It was the stupidest thing she could’ve done!

BTW: NOT too lazy to comment on our post ;-)

… but the music is really good. That’s what I like best about the movie – great soundtrack!

I loved that movie too. My aunt loves John Travolta! That man can dance. All I can say is damn she was skinny.

Yeah, but it had a way better soundtrack and choreography than The Vagina Monologues.

Because chicks in leather are hotter than guys in blazers?

LOL What you’re calling trampy, I call HOT, damn she looked good in that outfit!! woohoo!! ;)

It was a fun movie, considering ALL of those principal players were over 20! (and Stockard Channing was in her 30’s!) I’d kill to look that great in that spandex, too (did she actually HAVE a butt? I don’t think so!) STILL, you do have a really good point. She sings “You’re The One That I Want,” but she’s thinking “but I couldn’t really get you without slumming it up.” Guess what? Things have not even changed! Check out the outfits on Britney, Gwen Stefani, and all the other “it” girls. SLUTTY!!!

    DutchBitch – Glad you agree!

Schnoodlepooh – It’s fun “sing in the shower/car/when no one’s listening” music, right? ;-)

Sophmom – Go rent it, tis fun!

Leave – She must have done a lot of working out to get THAT skinny!

Zen Wizard – Good point ;-)

Malnurtered Snay – Welcome! And interesting point lol. Personally I prefer the guys in blazers though ;-)

Se7 – Why am I not surprised? ;-) BUT, how good she looked in the outfit is not the point…

D-Man – I’m not sure if there was a Grease III or not.

Glo – Me too but it would be an occasional thing, not a permanent lifestyle :-)

Nat – I know about their ages. Funny, isn’t it?!

Good point. Sigh. What happened to self worth? Not as sexy I guess…

Your take is interesting Lisa. Me on the otherhand loved it when she became a tramp! She could have even been more trampier! lol

This movie confused me so badly as a child, because I thought that all high schoolers were supposed to look that grownup. So when I got to high school and John Travolta wasn’t there, boy was I disappointed. ;)

And I recently met Maxwell Caulfield (one of the “stars” of that flop, Grease 2). He now shaves his head because dude is going BALD.

I never liked the movie that much, to be honest. I just watched it because I had a huge crush on Olivia. :)

What bugged me the first time watching the movie is that I just couldn’t buy Olivia’s transformation into slutty bad girl. There’s just something so fresh-faced, girl nextdoor, throw something on the bar-b (not Barbie…) about her.

And I probably shouldn’t admit this, but my sensibility is more upset by the ridiculous BIG HAIR than the skintight pants ;-)

    Right On!
    To coin a phrase.
I liked my Olivia just as she was. I didn’t like Travolta (Over-rated) none too much after what he did to her. Punk. Then she went and got Physical. also slutty appeal, which kinda worked on me as I bought the CD and sank into her sexy appeal. Or was it a cassette? Or an LP?
Xanadu, turning mystical… You know, maybe she was the bad Influence!?

I guess it was about the “greaser” image back then. Good girls and bad boys– opposites attract. I enjoyed the movie but the thing that put me off was when Sandy stepped out with that cigarette. Yuck!

I always assumed it wouldn’t stick…she wasn’t really changing for him, but changing so that he wouldn’t look bad. Then she would kick him in the nuts, tell him to go to college, and it would’ve all worked out.

I can’t claim any fondness for John Travolta, but that movies always makes me smile too, even if the ending does leave something to be desired.

By feminist standards, Sandy totally sold out. It was still damn entertaining to watch it though. Did you see how Grease is going to be a casting reality show now? What WILL they think of next?!:)

I always liked Sandy in spandex and leather. And high heels.

But I’m a guy. Of course we dig chicks like that.

Sandy 2 was HOT!!!!!!!!…It was just a look…Olivia looked great..Just because a gal wears sexy clothes doesn’t mean she has to be bad…Good girls should dress like that too….

[...] I have a certain fondness for this movie/musical but it also pisses me off. Still, I’m having fun with the premise. Whoever is chosen as Sandy and Danny will actually star in the new production of Grease on Broadway. I enjoy being part of the casting process. Or so I tell myself anyway. Some very cheesy writing though, especially the “you’re the one that I want” stuff. Ugh. [...]
