My lovely mother sent me some holiday cash with the proviso, “treat yourself to a Broadway show.” Being the dutiful daughter that I am, I followed her instructions. Last night I saw “Jersey Boys.” And it was absolutely wonderful – I adored it! So charming and fun. It’s the story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. And their rise from, being well Jersey boys, to stars. The music is all authentic i.e. “Walk like A Man,” “Sherry,” Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and their renditons were outstanding. The actors really have the original song stylings down. Not to mention Frankie and the Boys style of movin’ and groovin’. FYI, “Jersey Boys” won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical. Standing ovations afterwards, and the entire audience was saying how much they loved it. I’m STILL singing the songs this morning. I highly recommend it!
Tell me about some of the great shows you have seen.
My mom sent me money to go see a specific exhibit at the Guggenheim once: I never went and I still feel guilty about it to this day.
What, seriously?
I think I saw a high-school production of something involving sailors and a boat. When, uh, I was in high school.
I saw the Producers. I was underwhelmed. Also: The Violet Hour. You know, for a guy that works on a show about Broadway musicals and plays, I don’t really like them.
I’m a big Oklahoma fan. I am also quite fond of Alan Jay Lerner’s work
First, a big belated Happy Birthday! Glad you enjoyed yourself with friends
Second, that was nice of your mom. I’ve never seen a Broadway play– always wanted to, but haven’t gotten there. The last play I saw was a musical about the birth of the blues, set back in the jazz days of the 30’s/40’s, with an all-star theatre cast down from NYC, if that counts. I don’t remember the name of it, but the singing & dancing was fantastic!
The last live show either the Wife or I saw was Dora the Explorer. She and Grasshopper loved it.
I think we need to get out more.
Note to self: Travel to NY, see Broadway show, have fun
The last “show” I saw was something my sister was in last summer or fall(she performs in a lot of local plays and musicals). And I’m old enough to have seen the original rendition of those Jersey Boys when they first popped onto the scene. Yes, I know; I’m an old fart… :p
All I can tell you is I was a big fan and theirs was one of the first eight tracks I ever owned. then cassettes, then CD’s
Sounds like a great time, I’m glad you got to go! I never was much of a Franki Valli fan myself though
1st broadway show was Beauty and the Beast in April. But my 2nd is in less than forty eight hours… not that I’m counting down!
Were you dancing in the streets, I mean aisles? How amazing that you have Broadway in your backyard.
Ha, well we will be waiting for that musical here at Holland !!!
Maulleigh – Awww
Mal Snay – Not a big fan of the arts I see
Was that musical “South Pacific?”
Retro – I really liked “The Producers.” But, I was lucky enough to see Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick. They were a riot!
I want your job
Uisce – Me too!
Carolyn – Thanks!
And that show sounded wonderful!!!
Vince – Indeed. Maybe grownups night out?
DutchBitch – Let me know when you are coming!
Bruce – Frankie and The Four Seasons rocked! Still do
Paul – 8 tracks? What are those?
Se7 – Thanks! Maybe Godsmack will do a rendition of “Sherry” sometime
Oob – Yay! Which show?
Glo – Pretty much lol. I almost didn’t mind having to walk 8 blocks in subzero temperatures afterwards.
And I love having access to B-Way!
JustMeTalking – Welcome! And I’m sure the touring company will be there soon
Sounds great, but I don’t get to shows unless they hit Boston and I have someone to go with. Just by sheer luck, hubby’s company had cheeeeeep tickets to see “Movin’ Out” last year, so we went. Loved it! Maybe “Jersey Boys” will hit the road! (I’m secretly hoping for “Wicked,” though.) Glad you enjoyed yourself!!!
My mother and her ex-ass-husband used to take me to Disney on Ice in Boston when I was little…. since then…. not much of anything except school trips. I think the very last thing I saw on-stage was something in Conn. a few years ago. I need to find some good theatre productions ’round here… I feel so deprived right now
An oldie but a goodie: Cats. Loved it.
Countless shows at the “world-renowned” Shakespeare Festival. Both Shakespeare plays and other popular sort of plays.
When I lived there I used to go to at least three plays a year, or there were also a couple other little theaters in town that were fun. ALL good.
Can you believe it seems someone stole this question from me this week, along with another post of mine? Come look!:(
