Pup Romp

Posted on Saturday 10 November 2007

Ally da Pup had a playdate last night.

Well actually we both did.

My friend Annie came over with her dog Hudson. We wanted the dogs to hang out and see how they got along for an extended time period. Annie and I both travel often and we may end up dog sitting for each other in the near future. The plan was for all four of us to hopefully chill, then have some food delivered.

Hudson is a toy poodle. He is a puppy that bounces. Like he is on springs or something.

Bounce. Bounce. Bounce.

Hudson is also a typical nosy puppy. He must see, sniff, lick, and bite everything.

Ally da Pup, despite her name, is an older dog. She is usually pretty laid back. Except when it comes to HER turf. Ally is a terrier mix and quite spunky.

I was a bit nervous.

Hudson comes bounding in my apartment and runs over to Ally. He then tries to bite Ally’s paw.

“GRRRRR,” says Ally.

Hudson immediately shifts gears and jumps in Ally’s bed. Ally is so not loving this.

Off Hudson goes to grab a teddy bear. He quickly gets bored and tries to grab the teddy bear Ally has in HER mouth.

“GRRRRR.”

(I’m thinking quietly OH SHIT.)

All this goes on for a while until Hudson bites Ally several times in a row.

“GROWL! WOOF! GRRRRR!”

Ally lunges at Hudson with fire in her eyes. Hudson immediately gets in the submissive position, (on his back, paws in the air.)

“ALLY, NO!”

Ally sits back, Hudson is chastened but a bit more respectful. Until he forgets and bites Ally again a few minutes later.

But now that the alpha dog has been established, so the two pups are BFF. They run and play the rest of the night. And they have an awesome time.

Dogs RULE.

    funny.

the same thing has happened with the terrier and my mom… the growling, the issues over who has the big bed, the decisions about stuffed animals, and which one belongs to whom… the submissive behaviour.

it’s settled now, and all is well when i call.

mom understands the terrier rules, as she allows her to sleep on the pillows, eat first, and toss the stuffed animals off of ‘her’ bed.

yeah, the alpha dog is in charge. if only she could drive, she’d be in, well, dog heaven.

Wow, sounds like it got a bit intense there for a moment, but glad it all worked out and that Ally has a new friend now. I hate when dogs do that territorial growling thing. Don’t they realize that they’re pampered and in a house, so there’s no reason for it?

That was ruffffff for a while. Ally may have thought she was getting traded, at first. For a GUY!!! No less. Everybody, dogwise, is fixed, I suppose?

Lisa: Thank you for your comment on my site about Sahara.

Hudson? I thought he was hanging with Rosie The Wonderdog? I must be way behind the times! :)

Yeah they do rule! I wish I could growl at someone and have them roll over onto their back… wait a minute… I do have that power with my old man. Ha! I always knew he was a dawg!

Sounds like they were playing King of the Hill. My 2 do that a lot, usually around my feet. They do indeed rule :)

My two cats do that game with the landlady’s golden retriever. The retriever is such a coward though that she doesn’t understand the cats are knocking themselves out to be friends. The cats rub against her and she jumps. They try to lick her, and she jumps. They roll over on their backs (the ultimate in cat submission) and she jumps. Yet she loves to come up and see them. I’m still not sure why. ;)

Poodles are not generally the brightest of dogs. Ally had her work cut out for her in getting some respect.

Glad the two have become friends. It will certainly be helpful for you and your friend to trade off dog sitting!

Dogs are cool. I want one, but I don’t want to have to take care of one, and I KNOW it would end up being my job in this family! So, I remain dog-free and I am a pet owner vicariously through you and Deni, and all of my neighbors! I guess that works out for now!

    AND Ally RULESS!!!

I love watching dogs play. We have three and at any given time, two of them — and usually the same two — are rolling around on the floor or on the lawn. the biggest one, and he’s the youngest, could rip his older/smaller brother to shreds — but doesn’t, of course! but it’s a riot to see them all tough and then all tired from a good “fight”.

Everytime I bite people, they slap the shit out of me…..

    I’m still mean as hell.

Yeah, we need to be more like dogs. Minus the ass sniffing.

If we humans worked things out like that … well … I think “arrest” would be in the the vocabulary!

Glad you had a good play date! :)

Don’t you sometimes wish people were more like dogs? I like dogs more than I like people, present company excluded of course.
