Conversation With Mom – The Greenmarket Version

Posted on Wednesday 17 September 2008

Mom is visiting me in New York and we are trying to plan our day.

Lisa: “What would you like to do today? The weather is glorious, all crisp and cool – great walking around weather. Shall we just go wander or do you want to do something special?”

Mom: “I would like to cook supper for the two of us and HCFG tonight. Where’s a good place to shop?”

Lisa: “Yum! If it’s not too much trouble then that would be awesome. How about if we go down to 14th Street? The Farmers Market aka the Union Square Greenmarket is running today. I remember you really enjoyed it last time. We can get lots of freshly grown veggies and fruit and eat quite healthy tonight.”

Mom: “That would be wonderful. I definitely enjoyed going there last year, their produce was very nice. And when we’re done buying all that healthy stuff, let’s go to 2nd Avenue Deli and eat pastrami sandwiches.”

Lisa: “Sounds good to me!”

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I guess…

I don’t know why, but this drew from me a chuckle, perhaps maybe it was even a guffaw. In any case, nicely put!

It must be the Italian in me, but I just love sandwiches and Pastrami sounds yummy!

Though sitting down to a good meal someone else prepared is a treat as well.

SHE calls him “Hot Cute Fun Guy,” TOO?

Let me know when the “Springer” episode airs.

FROM LISA B.: Nope, she calls him by his real name. But all of Blog Land doesn’t need to know what said name is ;-)

Lisa B. Just walked around…, here, have some more spinach.

It isn’t right, Lisa B., it just isn’t right.

    An exhausting weekend!

Sure, the stuff from the Union Square farmer’s market was nutritious and very healthy… But all of us went to the famous Carnegie Deli on Friday night. The pastrami sandwiches were enough to raise cholesterol into the “danger zone.” I passed out after half a sandwich and a slice of their legendary cheesecake. I think we way more than cancelled out the goodness of the organic Farmers Market veggies. I’m sort of hoping that eating three baby carrots and an asparagus spear on the positive side balances out one pound of pastrami and cheesecake with whipped cream on the negative side. But I’m not sure.

I usually get the pastrami and lipitor special at the Carnegie deli.

For some reason, I thought the conversation would turn into a huge verbal fight that would end with you doing some crazy act that would win you your mother’s affection and approval. Or maybe I’ve just been watching too many episodes from the Arrested Development marathon on TV…
